Horse Training

Good horses aren't made overnight. They're built on a solid foundation.

From starting young colts to putting miles on seasoned horses, we focus on developing confident, willing horses through patience, consistency, and real-world experience.

Meet Joey

Joey has been working with horses his entire life, starting colts on his family's ranch by age 12 and training horses for others as a teenager. Since then, he's bought, trained, and sold numerous horses, including starting and training the horses our own kids ride.

His favorite part? Watching a horse finally get it. He believes in working with a horse, not against it, and building a foundation that lasts.

Beyond the Round Pen

Every horse starts with the basics, but training doesn't stop at the round pen. Once they're ready, horses gain experience across our working cattle ranch: crossing creeks, navigating trails, encountering livestock, and getting accustomed to everyday distractions.

Depending on their progress, horses may also have opportunities to move and work cattle.

Training Duration: Colt starting requires a minimum commitment of 60 days. For other horses, 30 days may not be enough to accomplish the owner's goals, depending on the horse's experience, progress, and individual needs.

Hay: $250/month/horse (or provide your own hay and grain)

Accommodations: Individual 20' × 20' covered stalls

Horse Care & Policies

Health Requirements: All horses must arrive with proof of current vaccinations (including at least EEE/WEE, Tetanus, West Nile, and Flu/Rhino) and a negative Coggins test dated within the past 12 months.

Veterinary & Farrier Care: Smiling Bovine Ranch has an established veterinarian available for emergencies and a farrier available for trimming and shoeing as needed. Emergency veterinary care may be authorized at the discretion of Smiling Bovine Ranch, without prior owner approval when circumstances require immediate attention. All veterinary and farrier expenses are the responsibility of the horse's owner and will be added to the final bill, payable upon pickup.

Horse Pickup: Horses must be picked up within seven (7) days of the completion of their scheduled training period unless alternative arrangements have been made in advance. Additional boarding fees may apply for late pickups.

Liability & Assumption of Risk: Horses are inherently unpredictable, and injuries, illness, or accidents can occur despite reasonable care and precautions. Smiling Bovine Ranch, LLC takes the safety and well-being of every horse seriously; however, owners acknowledge that training and boarding involve inherent risks, including injury, illness, or death. To the extent permitted by law, Smiling Bovine Ranch, LLC is not responsible for injuries or losses resulting from a horse's own behavior or other inherent risks of equine activities.
